Problem: I found out that all my videos which are inserted into my slides have been directly embedded into my project file, resulting in a large project file size. For my previous projects, my videos are normally stored in a separate “ProjectName_files” folder. How do I undo the embedding of the videos and keep them separate in a “ProjectName_files” folder? This step is useful for me as I may need to replace the videos in my slides every now and then while preserving the trims and cuts which I have made in the project file. Thank you.
Whether audio/video files are embedded in the .approj file or stored in the ProjectName_files folder depends on the Save external resource threshold in Preferences > Miscellaneous. By default, files larger than 50 MB are stored externally. This setting only applies when the resources are first imported, so existing embedded resources cannot be converted back to external ones.
2. Replacing videos
If your goal is to replace the videos while keeping the trims and cuts, you can do so from the Resources pane. Right-click the video and choose Replace Resource. This replaces the video while preserving its trims, cuts, and other edits. Please refer to the Resources Pane section in the User Manual (page 431) for details.
You can use Project > Shrink Project after editing to reduce the project size by removing unnecessary data, though it won’t convert embedded resources to external ones.
Hi Hoa, thanks for your reply. I have tried method 2 to replace videos, unfortunately the video edits which I have done for the old video are not applied to the new video - the entire new video just get inserted into the timeline. Is there anything else I have missed out?
Could you please record a short video showing how you replace the video and what happens afterward? This will help us reproduce the issue and investigate it further.
Hi, sure I have recorded a short video and emailed you due to file size exceeding the limit here. Notice that the replaced video is much longer than the original one, indicating that there are no trims processed on the new video after it is inserted.
It seems the video may not have been replaced using the Replace Resource function. Could you please try replacing it from the Resources pane as shown in the attached demonstration video?
Please also make sure that the replacement video has the same filename as the original video before performing the replacement.
Please let us know if the issue still occurs after trying this method.
