SCORM 1.2 completion status changes from completed to incomplete when reopening a course in Moodle

Dear ActivePresenter Support Team,

I am experiencing an issue with SCORM 1.2 packages exported from ActivePresenter Pro, and I would appreciate your help in identifying the cause and finding a permanent solution.

Software and environment

  • ActivePresenter Pro 10.6.1 (I previously used version 9.3.0).

  • Moodle LMS.

  • SCORM 1.2.

  • The SCORM package is a theory-based course exported in Demonstration mode.

  • The completion condition in ActivePresenter is set to “Number of slides viewed”, with a minimum of 25 slides.

Description of the problem

When a student completes the entire course, Moodle correctly records the SCORM status as completed.

However, if the student opens the same SCORM activity again to review the content and then exits after viewing just two slides, Moodle changes the status from completed to incomplete.

The elapsed time continues to accumulate, but the completion status is overwritten. As a result, a student who has already completed the course appears to have an incomplete activity simply because they reopened it to review the material.

Steps to reproduce the issue

  1. Export a course from ActivePresenter in SCORM 1.2 format, using Demonstration mode.

  2. Upload the package to Moodle.

  3. Open the SCORM activity and view all the slides until the course is completed.

  4. Verify that Moodle records cmi.core.lesson_status as completed.

  5. Exit the activity.

  6. Reopen the same activity, view only two slides, and exit again.

  7. Check the SCORM tracking data in Moodle.

After the second session, cmi.core.lesson_status changes to incomplete.

Troubleshooting already performed

I have tried several Moodle settings, including:

  • Forcing completion.

  • Enabling auto-commit.

  • Disabling automatic continuation.

  • Disabling the option that allows the mastery score to override the status.

  • Keeping the number of attempts unlimited and setting “Force new attempt” to “No”.

  • Configuring Moodle activity completion to require the SCORM activity to be viewed and completed.

None of these settings has resolved the issue.

I have also observed the same behavior in an older SCORM package exported with ActivePresenter 9.3.0, so I cannot confirm whether this issue was introduced in version 10.6.1.

My questions

  1. Is this the expected behavior of ActivePresenter when exporting SCORM 1.2 packages in Demonstration mode, or could it be a bug?

  2. Why does the package set cmi.core.lesson_status to incomplete when a previously completed course is reopened?

  3. Is there a setting in ActivePresenter that allows students to revisit a completed course without overwriting the completed status?

  4. If this is not currently supported, is there a recommended workaround or a planned fix?

My goal is to allow students to review the course as many times as they wish while keeping the activity marked as completed in Moodle once they have finished it successfully.

I can provide the original ActivePresenter project file and the exported SCORM packages for further investigation.

Thank you for your assistance.

Best regards

Hi Francisco,

This is the current behavior in both SCORM 1.2 and SCORM 2004, and it applies to all operation modes, not only Demonstration mode.

When a completed course is reopened, LMSs handle the session differently. ActivePresenter has no reliable cross-LMS method to determine whether the course is running in review mode or to restore the previously completed session.

For your specific case—SCORM 1.2 in Demonstration mode—you can add the following JavaScript to the project’s On Load event:

if (prez.demoMode() &&
    typeof doLMSGetValue === "function" &&
    doLMSGetValue("cmi.core.lesson_mode") === "review") {
    prez.reviewCourse();
    prez.pause(false);
}

Alternatively, learners can select Start a new attempt in Moodle when reviewing the course. Moodle will then store the review as a separate attempt instead of overwriting the completed one.

We will review this behavior for possible improvement in future ActivePresenter versions.

Regards,
