Preventing Re-Optimization of Previously Optimized Videos When Exporting HTML5 in ActivePresenter

Question: When exporting a project to HTML5 in ActivePresenter, the software re-optimizes video files—even if they’ve already been optimized. For example, I have 4 videos that take up 4 MB in total, but after exporting, the exported project’s videos take up 12 MB. Is there a setting to prevent this behavior?

What the Documentation Says (ActivePresenter 9)

According to the official ActivePresenter 9 “Export Projects to HTML5 Files” documentation, during the export process you can configure parameters like Video Quality (%), Audio Quality, and image formats (JPEG/PNG). However, there’s no mention of an option to skip re-encoding for videos that have already been optimized or compressed. ActivePresenter always processes video files afresh during export.

Thank you for your question.

Currently, ActivePresenter does not provide an option to skip re-encoding for video and audio files. This means that even if your media has already been optimized, the software will still re-process it during export.
We recommend trying to export with the default settings to see if that helps reduce the file size.

The good news is that this feature will be available in ActivePresenter 10, which will be released soon.

I’m experiencing the same issue but then with te export to video MP4. On April 30th, 2025, the exported video file was approximately 30MB, and the overall project size was 1.4GB. However, when I export the same project now (on August 18th), the export size has increased to 1.5GB. What could have caused this change, and how can I reduce the export size back to the original level?

Hello John,

I’ve replied to you via email with some suggestions on how to reduce the file size, such as adjusting the video quality settings, saving the project on your local computer instead of a network drive, and recompressing media.

If these steps don’t resolve the issue, please kindly send us the project file that is experiencing the problem (.approj) along with its external data folder (named in the format PROJECT_FILE_files, if any) to support@atomisystems.com for further investigation. Please note that you only need to send us the project file, not the exported video (1.5GB).

Regards,
