Canon DSLR as webcam

Problem: I have a Canon 5D connected via USB using a recently released app driver (https://www.usa.canon.com/internet/portal/us/home/support/self-help-center/eos-webcam-utility/) which works perfectly in realtime applications (e.g. Zoom, Meet etc.). I can also record video directly from it using other apps.
Nonetheless, when trying to record video in Active Presenter 8 it does not show up as an option on the drop-down menu.

ActivePresenter Version: 8.0.6 or 8.0.7 (both tested, same results)

OS: Windows 10 home.

Notes: other than than the software works flawlessly and it is really useful. I hope I can get it to work with this DSLR since its image quality is way better than my laptop’s webcam.

Hi,

That is a known issue in ActivePresenter 8.0.7 when working with some specified cameras. Can you please help us to check if the following temporary version works or not:

If it doesn’t work, please share the log of ActivePresenter so we can check. To view the log, click ActivePresenter > Preferences > Miscellaneous > View Log.

Please note that this temporary version is not stable enough for production use. You should uninstall it after checking.

We are trying to fix this problem in the next update.

Thanks for sharing the log.

According to the log, it seems to be a different problem. Can you please let us know the Model of your camera? Some old cameras don’t support new Windows API and ActivePresenter 8 may not recognize it (However, ActivePresenter 7 may support them). You can try updating the driver for your camera to see if it can help.

It’s a Canon 5D mark 2. It’s old (2012) and was never intended to work as an USB webcam. Canon only recently released a driver (during COVID19) to allow it to be used with teleconference apps. The software is beta and my camera model is not even listed as a supported model. For all that I was expecting problems anyways. The driver for USB webcam function is the one and only ever posted so there’s really no older driver nor a updated version. I will try and install another driver that was previously used to control shooting (but never made windows recognize it as a webcam). I’ll also try Active Presenter 7. Thansk a lot for helping me on this. I realized it’s not a straightforward setup. I just got really excited when I noticed it worked flawlessly for Zoom, Google Meet, OBS, Prezi Video and others that I decided to give it a try in AP.

Update: I just tried Active Presenter 7 and for the first time the camera is listed as an option in the recording window drop down menu. There’s no preview and when I recorded a few seconds the movie is scrambled. Please, find the log below, if that helps.

According to the log and your description, the camera setting is not supported with ActivePresenter 7.

Can you please set its setting to the options as in the below screenshot:

Hey, thanks for the feedback. I just tried to change this setting but when the Canon camera is selected this properties box does not show up. I click on “format settings” and nothing happens. It only works if the internal camera os selected (then I can see a preview and change the color space).

Unfortunately, it seems ActivePresenter 7 doesn’t work well with the default settings of camera and the camera doesn’t provide custom settings. Since we currently only release maintenance updates for version 7, so I am not sure that we will add the support for this device in this version.
