i made a screen recording in a defined area and then exported it as mp4. No matter which sound setting I use, the sound recording is missing when playing.

Could you please share the log of ActivePresenter so that we can check?
To view the log, in Start Page, click Preferences (the Gear icon) > Miscellaneous > View Log. In case the log file is large, you can send it to: support@atomisystems.com
Besides, make sure that you access the Export tab > Video instead of right-clicking the video time bar on the Timeline pane when you export your project to video.
