Is it possible to fade the spotlight away?
So you get a softer transition between normal mode and when u want something spotlighted.

Fading a spotlight is all possible. You just need to go to the Animations tab and select the fade in and fade out effects. For details, please see this tutorial.
In case you are interested, you can adjust the darkness of the area outside the spotlight. Just go to the Properties pane > Style & Effects > Fill and change the transparency of the color.
